Themed Events | Out of Africa

A sunset, sand dunes, and the African heat—those were the pillars of our latest themed event design, “Out of Africa.”

Transporting event guests to far-off, magical places is both a fascinating and challenging task. The decoration of an event is what makes guests feel as though they’re standing in the middle of the African desert or wandering through an enchanted forest. At Crimons, we love taking a single idea, pushing it to its fullest potential, and surprising our clients with unique, soulful scenography. Today, we’ll walk you through how we designed this summer-themed dinner.

Theme

First and foremost, you need to choose a theme that will define the entire evening or event. It becomes the connecting thread between each element and the starting point for the design. To truly surprise your guests, opt for something original, trendy, or widely recognizable. In our case, since it was the beginning of summer, we chose the Out of Africa aesthetic—well-known among attendees and evocative of warmth, sunshine, and nature.

Concept & Design

Once the theme was set, we began to add colors, images, and textures to the concept, creating a moodboard. This tool is perfect for inspiration, identifying the core elements of a style or theme, and visualizing your idea.

To recreate the desert feel, we chose earthy tones, sunset oranges, and natural materials like wicker and wood.

Once we defined the look and feel, we moved into design. At Crimons, we create layouts and 3D renders to place the various zones, event furniture from our catalogue, and props. This helps ensure everything fits perfectly and the setup feels cohesive.

Don’t forget the props—they’re key to making the experience complete and truly immersive. Plants, guest accessories, table centerpieces, and bamboo structures draped with fabric added realism and brought the whole event to life.

Event Production

Production timing will also determine the scale and level of detail for any themed event. You need to know exactly how much setup time you’ll have, so you can plan accordingly and avoid being caught short. For this event, we had a day and a half to set everything up. It’s crucial to understand how long it takes to place and style every item—setting up tables and chairs is one thing, but dressing them with linens, tableware, and decor takes much more time.

Lighting

Always allocate time for a lighting test beforehand—it’s a crucial element in organizing themed events. If you’d like to dive deeper into this topic, check out our article: The Role of Lighting in Events.”
